Stress and Nutrition

by Jorge Bustamante

Stress is a normal response under certain circumstances causing hormones such as adrenaline, pour into the body’s systems, providing stimulation, preparing the body for action, e.g. in response to immediate danger. Prolonged stress can cause mental and physical damage.

Stress can lead to depression, insomnia, allergies, ulcers, digestive disorders, menstrual problems, palpitations, impotence, etc.

A balanced diet rich in B, C vitamins and Magnesium will help coping with stress. This includes: Wholegrains, almonds, bee pollen, fish, broccoli and green vegetables, fresh fruit, and the superfood Cacao (raw chocolate) rich in natural anti-stress compounds such as Anandamide, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Tryptophan.

My partner suffers daily from headaches. Being a typical male, he won’t go and see anyone about it though. Any ideas? I think he might be dehydrated as doesn’t drink nearly enough water.

By Jorge Bustamante

Most of us suffer from headaches at some time, making this an extremely common complaint. Headaches may be caused by a variety of factors, most of which are not serious. However in some cases a headache may be a symptom of a more serious disorder.

It is important to see your doctor if headaches become more severe or more frequent.

About 90% of headaches are caused by muscular tension due to poor posture, tense neck muscles, depression, stress, tiredness, etc. More severe headaches are known as cluster headaches or migraines. The majority of people who experience recurrent cluster headaches are male.

A variety of triggers can bring on cluster headaches or migraines, such as certain foods, stress, lack of sleep, smoke, low blood sugar levels, dehydration, food sensitivity, too much caffeine, alcohol, low levels of magnesium in the diet, etc. Your partner should try to identify and eliminate the triggers of his headaches.

Dehydration is a common cause of headaches as the tissues that surround the brain are mostly composed of water. If these tissues lose fluid they shrink, causing pain an irritation, so yes, you should encourage him to increase his water intake to about 2 litres of water a day.

For an immediate relief he can apply ice packs to the back of the neck and rest for at least 30 minutes, practice deep breathing to increase oxygen supply to the brain, and massage around the neck, and scalp with the fingertips.

Nutritionally speaking, a good balance diet including fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon and tuna will provide essential vitamins and minerals. Calcium and magnesium are very important, as they work together to help prevent headaches. Good sources of calcium and magnesium are dark green leafy vegetable such as kale or broccoli, beans and peas, nuts, raw chocolate, bananas, wheat germ.

I’ve suffered with bloating for years. Can you recommend any foods or supplements that can help me? Although I have a fairly small frame and am not overweight, I can almost look pregnant at times.

By Jorge Bustamante

Although there are lots of supplements advertised to help you with bloating, it would be wise to investigate this with a qualify practitioner as there could be a number of causes.

Some chemical reactions occur after eating certain foods such as broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, onions and beans and could cause bloating. Added to this, eating lots of raw foods, eating too quickly or too much could also cause bloating.

Wheat, milk and dairy products causing bloating are often the result of food intolerance. Try to avoid all dairy and wheat products for a few days and see if you feel better. If you do, you may be able to minimise the effects of the intolerance by eating these foods in small portions or by choosing an alternative to wheat/dairy.

As a general suggestion to your diet I would recommend you eat smaller, more frequent meals, chewing properly and eating slowly and keep hydrated!

You could also try drinking peppermint tea after meals, to improve your digestion, so less gassy fermentation occurs.

Eating a slice of pineapple after meals eases symptoms. Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelin which breaks down food and aids digestion.

Finally, you should try to avoid fried or spicy food, alcohol, coffee, anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g. ibuprofen), smoking, stress, alcohol, fizzy drinks and processed foods containing preservatives, sweeteners or colouring agents.

Bloating is often easy to resolve making some simple changes to your diet. However, you should consult a qualify practitioner if your symptoms do not improve.

The Healing Secrets of Food and Nutrition

by Jorge Bustamante

Today, more and more people understand that disease can be prevented and cured naturally. For many years we have adopted a “quick fix” option, spending billions on over-the-counter medicines, suppressing and treating only symptoms but not the root cause!

Many of us are realising that there are natural alternatives to prevent illness rather than simply treat it; but, are we now overspending on nutritional supplements and other “natural” remedies, looking for a “natural quick fix” answer?

We must not forget that Mother Nature has given us the most wonderful gifts: natural foods, packed of nutrients, designed to nourish our bodies, to make them work at their optimum level!

Natural, whole and organic food and its nutritional elements can be used as medicine. Discover the healing secrets of “food”, take responsibility of your own health, and become healthy!

Naturopathic Nutritionists follow this principle. They treat their patients as a whole (body, mind and soul), looking for deficiencies that may be causing illness, which are specific to each individual, making sure you take a balanced combination of nutrients, tailored specifically to your individual needs, to make you healthy.

The importance of wholefoods

All wholefoods are a mixture of vital nutrients and other chemicals, so while a food may be rich in a particular nutrient it may also contain other valuable nutrients and health-giving factors.

Some foods that contain a high range of important nutrients are often called “superfoods” e.g wheatgrass, sprouts, spirulina, and more.

Finding foods that taste good and do you good are part of the fun of eating well, whether you live alone, or as part of a family.

A healthy diet

Proper nutrition can determine how we look, feel, work, whether we will be nervous, tired, pessimistic, joyful, comfortable, happily active, whether we will age prematurely or enjoy our lives to the full. In other words, Nutrition can determine our quality of life.

Try these steps to improve the nutritional content of your food:

Eat organic food whenever possible. It may be more expensive, but you can be sure that the food you are eating has not been processed and has been grown without the use of pesticides, hormones, fertilisers, and other chemicals.

  • Include superfoods in your diet.
  •
  • Eat the skin of vegetables
  •
  • Don’t cut, wash, or soak fruit and vegetables until you are ready to eat them.
  •
  • Eat whole grains.
  •
  • Drink fresh fruit/vegetable juice.
  •
  • Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Eat raw whenever possible. If cooking, use as little water as possible.
  •
  • If you boil fruit or vegetables, use the water remaining in your sauces, soups, etc.
